Xavier Lawrence Smith

With humbled hearts and consoling minds, the Horton Funeral Home Family serves notice that Xavier Lawrence Smith affectionately called “Zay” layed down the cares of this world in Gatesville, NC on December 20,2022. From there, he picked up his new wardrobe and golden keys for his everlasting life in Heaven.

Xavier Lawrence Smith was born on November 21,1984 in Harlem, New York to the late great Mary (Johnson) Hertzog and Peter Smith.

Xavier or "Zay" as so many of us knew him as, was a passionate mechanic. He absolutely loved working on cars and always had his tools ready! He loved his music and took on the "louder the better" motto when it came to a good song!

He loved a good get-together and if it included his best friend Shuron's wife Erica's fried chicken, it made for a perfect day! He loved to cook and if he could help someone, he always would without a thought.

The only thing he loved more than cars was his family. Xavier is survived by his wife Lisa (Feathers) Smith and his five beautiful children Amya, Avery, Elizabeth, Khloe, and Xavier II and his step-son's Nicholas "Nick" and RJ "R-man". He is also survived by his loving family, step-father Matthew J. Hertzog, eldest sister Precious Johnson (VA) and youngest sister Ann Marie Smith (NY); close cousins Yasmeen Baskins and Wanya Johnson (VA) as well as his "second mother" Cheryl Johnson (VA) including many other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews cousins and close friends.

Xavier was a true people person and once he met you, you were family! We all will miss him and his laughter immensely.

He is preceded in death by his mother Mary (Johnson) Hertzog, grandparents Horrace & Agnes Holley, sister Alexandria "Niecy" Jamison (VA), Uncle Alexander "Al" Daniels (VA), and his favorite four-legged friend Angel.

A memorial service will be held at Horton's Funeral Home and Cremations 509 Dobbs St. Hertford, NC on Wednesday January 4th at 2:00pm.
