Robert Lee Skinner

With many mixed emotions and understandably broken hearts, the Horton’s Funeral Home and Cremations Family joins with family of Mr. Robert Lee Skinner as they prepare to say “Until We Reunite." Mr. Skinner transitioned from this Life on June 15, 2026. 

The heartbreaking task of planning the Life Remembering services for Mr. Skinner have been finalized and will commence on Sunday, June 21, 2026 at 3pm with a Triumphant Homegoing Celebration at Horton’s Funeral Home and Cremations with Dr. Darius J. Horton, Eulogist. Mr. Skinner will lie in peaceful repose from 2pm until time of service. 

Although Robert exited this walk called life and left a void in his family that no one but God can fill, they can find comfort knowing that if Robert could leave any consolation, it would be these Love-able Lord-like lyrics: I’m free....praise the Lord I’m free....I’m no longer bound, there no more chains holding me...for my soul is resting, it’s just a blessing.......praise the Lord, Hallelujah.....I’m free. 

Robert was born in Perquimans County, North Carolina, to the late James Edward Skinner Sr. and Rosa Everett Skinner. He graduated from Perquimans County Union School in 1963.

Following graduation, Robert briefly lived in New York before returning home to North Carolina. He began his career with Community Gas Company in Hertford and later worked for Southern Railroad. He eventually found his calling with Weyerhaeuser Company (formerly Union Camp/International Paper), where he dedicated 35 years of service before retiring.

Robert enjoyed collecting guns, completing fill-in puzzles, and buying and restoring automobiles. He was known for his strong work ethic, love for family, and the friendships he built throughout his life.He was preceded in death by his parents, three siblings,

three children, Marvin Skinner, Nathalie D. Skinner, and William Thatch and his beloved grandson, Jalil S.Skinner.

Robert leaves to cherish his memory his former wife, Mary Jones Moore; and their children: Nita R. Skinner of Hertford, NC; Freda V. Pierce of Norfolk, VA; Alethea S. Shoffner (Dennis) of Brooklyn, NY; Rolanda S. Johnson of Portsmouth, VA; and Debra A. Porter of Edenton, NC.

He is also survived by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his aunt Ilena (“Uncle Buddy”) of New York; a special cousin, Calvin Skinner of Raleigh,NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
