Joyce Jean Jones was born on October 27, 1946 in Hertford, North Carolina. She was the second of six children born to the late Ellis Garrett Sr. and Leverta Bonner Garrett.
Joyce received her education at King Street Elementary School in Hertford, North Carolina and Perquimans County Union School in Winfall, North Carolina.
Upon her arrival in New York, she worked at Gimbels Department Store for many years. Joyce left Gimbels Department Store and worked as a Nurse’s Assistant which she loved very much until her health declined.
Joyce met the love of her life, Melvin Jones, and they were joined in holy matrimony on April 3, 1965. To this union, four children were born, Sharon, Karen, Kevin and Steven.
Joyce began studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses 1989 with Ella Sanders. She became convinced through the Scriptures that she had found the true God, Jehovah. She dedicated her life to him and symbolized it by water baptism March 17, 2001.
Joyce leaves to cherish her memory, her husband Melvin and their four children, Sharon Solomon (Robert Sr.) of Hampton, Virginia; Karen Hamiel (Curtis) of Brooklyn, New York; Kevin Jones of Hertford, North Carolina; Steven Jones (Natisha) of Rochester, New York. Three sisters, Ellen, D. Riddick of Hempstead, New York; Audrey Garrett of Brooklyn, New York and Lesteene Bethea (Hector) of Bronx, New York. She was beloved by her 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A viewing and visitation for Mrs. Jones will take place on Monday, March 28, 2022 at Hortons Funeral Home and Cremations between the hours of 11am and 12pm. A Graveside Service will take place on Monday, March 28, 2022 at 1pm in Cedarwood Cemetery located in Hertford, NC.
