Janie Thomas Obituary

With an abundance of love and concern, the Horton’s Funeral Home and Cremations Family is embracing the loved ones of Mrs. Janie Mae Thompson Thomas, as they prepare to say “Farewell” to a link to their family chain. Mrs. Thomas closed the curtains on this journey called life Friday, October 13, 2023. 

Services to commemorate Mrs. Thomas’ life, will begin with a public visitation on Friday, October 20, 2023  between the hours of 5pm and 7pm at Horton’s Funeral Home and Cremations. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023  commencing at 12Noon at Eastern Star Church of God in Christ with Pastor J.C. Purkett, Eulogist. Mrs. Thomas will lie in state from 11am until time of service. 

Following the life honoring services in the sanctuary, Mrs. Thomas along with her adored family, will be escorted to her earthly resting place in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. 

Mother Janie was preceded in death by her son, Rodney Cullum, stepson Michael Griffin, sister Rosa Thompson, and brother James Thompson, Jr.

Mrs. Janie Griffin Thomas leaves to cherish her memory, sons, Alvin Cullum of Elizabeth City, NC,  Melvin Cullum (Vera) of East Pachogue, NY, Randy Cullum of Bellport, NY, George Griffin, Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC; her loving and only daughter, Leslie Griffin of Elizabeth City, NC; her special daughter/cousin D. Yvette Swain; step-children, Sabrina Griffin of Portsmouth, VA and Reggae Griffin of Europe;  brothers-in-law, Edgar Griffin (Ann), Nathan Griffin, Lemuel Griffin (Coralee) all of Elizabeth City, NC, and Arlee Griffin of Greenville, NC; sisters-in-law, Nora and Priscilla of Bayboro, NC, and Aldonia of Elizabeth City, NC; niece Daisy Thomas who cared for our dear Janie until the Lord called her home. She also leaves her legacy through 17 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She will be missed enormously by her grandchildren she helped raise, Ja’Quasia, Shaleek, and Jalynn as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.  

Although this is a task that no family wishes to partake, God promised to give them a strength that surpasses all understanding and He can do what no other power can do. 

The Compassionate Professionals of Horton’s  Funeral Home are walking hand in hand with this precious family during this period.
