As all remain in extreme sorrow and astonishing disbelief, the Horton’s Funeral Home Family joins with the family of George Edward Govan as they prepare to say, “Until We Reunite." George Edward Govan, 63, of Manteo, NC, passed away peacefully at Currituck Rehabilitation and Health on Friday, July 4, 2025.
George was born on May 17, 1962, to the late Edgar Govan Jr. and Mabel Govan Porter. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Willie E. Porter; his son, Tyler Shane Govan; and his brother, Edgar Govan III.
He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Kenyatta Govan and Faith Freeman (Kevin); four beloved grandchildren: Je’Kyia, Valentino, Tyler, and Kenji; loving sisters, First Lady Doris D. Smith (Bishop Alton Smith), Diane Simms (John), Debbie Burton, and Betty Selby; four brothers,Harris Burton, James Nat Burton, Larry Burton, and Bobby Govan (Kelleta); special cousin, Kenny Carver, who held a special place in his heart.
George was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He loved gardening, fishing, playing cards, being the Life of the party, and spending time with his grandchildren.
George grew up in Free Grace Church of Christ in Manteo and later joined St. Mark Church of Christ in Goldsboro, NC. He was highly regarded for his dedicated service in both Dare and Wayne County Schools. George's life was a shining example of quiet strength, deep love for family, and unwavering faith. His kindness, humor, and wisdom left an indelible mark on many lives, and his memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him. Though he has passed on, his legacy of love, service, and faith will continue to inspire all who were blessed to call him father, brother, and friend.
His Loving Family has honored George’s request for Cremation. Moments of Reflection will be held on Monday July 14,2025 at 5pm at Manns Harbor Docks 5227 US Highway 64 Manns Harbor, NC 27953
