Gardner Cowell Obituary

It is with sincere sadness that the Horton’s Funeral Home Family announces the earthly transition of Mr. Gardner Cowell as he peacefully answered the Master's call on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 in Winston Salem, North Carolina

The heartbreaking task of planning the Life Remembering services for Mr. Cowell have been finalized and will commence on Friday, December 2, 2022 at 12noon at Good Hope AME Zion Church with Rev. Iris Dance, Eulogist. Mr. Cowell will lie in state from 11am until time of service.

Immediately following the formalities in the Sanctuary, Mr. Cowell’s earthen vessel along with his cherished family will be escorted to Cowell Family Cemetery for Committal Rites.

As hard as it will be for Gardner’s loved ones to depart without him, God our Heavenly Father promised to give peace that will surpass all of our understanding even in the midst of grief and sorrow. The hymnologist said it best... when he put pen to parchment writing.... “We’ll understand it better all by and by.”

Gardner joined Good Hope AME Zion Church at an early age. He sang in the choir and played drums at the church and at Currituck High School. After high school, he attended North Carolina A&T State University where he was on the basketball team. He played ball overseas for a short time until he suffered an injury. Gardner worked for UPS as a mechanic. He is currently a member of St. John’s Lodge #12 of the 27th Masonic District of the Piedmont and Khalif Temple #144 Oasis of Greensboro Desert of North Carolina. He was an avid bowler and had a crazy love for classic cars.
In addition to his father, Johnnie Cowell Sr., he was preceded in death by three brothers: William Mullen, Johnnie Cowell Jr. and Wayne Cowell.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories, wife, Pamela Cowell; mother, Laphorest Walston Cowell; daughters, Alexa Cowell, Bria Lane, and Charmaine Cowell; one son, Aun’Darrious Cowell; a granddaughter, Au’Riah Cowell; sisters, Mavis (Russell) Ward, Jean (George) Harris, Terry Lewis, Rev. Iris Dance, and Tiffine Overton; brothers, Carol (Claire) Cowell, Anthony Cowell, and Rodriguez Cowell and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

The professionals at Horton’s Funeral Home and Cremations are accommodating each request and personal desire of the Cowell and connected families.
