Cordella (Carver) Griffin

January 12, 1916 ~ December 6, 2017 (age 101) 101 Years Old


Mother Cordella Carver Griffin passed to eternal rest on December 6, 2017 in her sleep at home.  She was born January 12, 1916, in Newland Township, Elizabeth City, NC to the late Daniel Andrew Carver and Lucy Moore Carver.  She attended school in the Newland Township.  She was predeceased by her husband Wesley Ward Griffin, three sons Wesley Jr, Andre, and Alphonso; brothers George, James, and Linwood Carver; sisters Mary & Martha Carver, and Myrtle Maxine C. Spence.  God blessed her to stay here on this Earth for 101 years and 11 months.

Mother Cordella originally worshipped at Bethel AME Zion Church.  In 1927, the family moved their membership to Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church where she worshipped  and was an active member until her health began to fail.  She would serve faithfully in the Sunday School, Missionary, Usher Board, Senior and Mass Choir, and over the last few years she would become the “Mother of the Church”.

Mother Cordella worked tirelessly in the community as well as helping any who needed help.  She would be found driving friends and family to church, doctor’s appointments or shopping.

Mother Cordella worked in the school system for 34 years.  Her work history included 17 years at Pasquotank Elementary School.  She would be found serving some of the best meals to the children and driving Bus 21.  Those of you who knew Mrs. Griffin understood what discipline sounded like and meant.  She also worked for 17 years for the Pasquotank County Head Start program driving the bus, cooking, serving, and teaching the little children.

Mother Cordella was married to Wesley Griffin, Sr. for 56 years.  She was a loving mother of four sons.  She leaves to cherish her memories one son, Clarence Lionell “Baby” (Willie Mae) Griffin of the home; eight grandchildren: Gary (Hope) Gibbs, Terry (Annette)Griffin,  Ward (Ruth) Griffin, Charles (Lavern) Griffin, Michael Griffin, Linda (Eddie) De La Cruz, Yvette Griffin, and Rhonda Griffin; eight great-grandchildren Naqueya, Quianna, Terry Jr, Darrick, Alexandria (Marcus), Kassandra, De-amonte, and Derrick: one brother Leamond Carver of Elizabeth City, NC: two daughter-in-laws, Alberta Griffin and Alice Griffin: one brother-in-law Ray (Elsie) Griffin, Sr: two special nieces Bernice Eason and Delishia “Dee Dee” (Algernon) Moore.  A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  The members of Mt. Carmel Church family and community loved her and helped to take care of her in the last few years of her life.

Celebration of Life will take place at 1pm Sunday December 10,2017at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church. Viewing and visitation will take place Saturday from 2-4pm at the church.

Dignified and Professional Service are being rendered to family by Hortons Funeral Home and Cremations Hertford,NC where Mrs. Griffin remains rest in comfort.
